York School Science Building and Athletic Fields
Monterey, California

The York science building's solar system generates a significant portion of its own energy which is both economical for the school and provides opportunities for the students to learn about responsible energy generation. Students are able to study, monitor, and display data relevant to their own building's energy consumption. This building contains over thirty "green" features and will be the first building in Monterey County to receive certification as environmentally responsible construction.

Bogard Construction, experienced in LEED Certified projects, built the new science wing at York School to qualify for a LEED certified rating. LEED's environmentally sensitive "green" construction practices make use of sustainable and recyclable materials. The materials used included Trex Wood-Polymer Lumber for all exterior decking. Engineered recycled lumber for beams, joists, rafters, and columns, and post-consumer/post industrial recycled insulation. Bogard installed a special transparent panel into the ceiling to allow students to view the unusual materials used to insulate their building—recycled blue jeans!
